How to Review Your App Analytics in 10 Minutes a Day

sticky-notes-to-do-listLet’s face facts: you’re busy. Like, really busy.

So busy that it can be a challenge to dedicate time and thoughtful analysis to your app metrics. It’s easy to get lost in meetings, to-dos, and the never-ending stream of email that floods your inbox daily. So what does it take to ensure your app is being looked after?

Easy: keeping tabs on your app comes down to organization and prioritization. In this post, we provide five ways you can review your app analytics daily in under 10 minutes.

1. Make a list of your top 5 daily metrics

Your app analytics can offer a wealth of data that’s easy to get lost in. We’re always a proponent of more metrics for better insights, but not all of those metrics need to be regularly monitored. Instead, choose the five metrics that matter most to you, and check those daily. This will give you a benchmark for progress on what actually matters to your app success. Your metrics could include:

    1. Daily active users (DAUs)

    2. New vs. returning users

    3. Number of app sessions

    4. Session length

    5. Session interval (how frequently users returned to the app)

    6. In-app purchases

    7. Conversion rate

Choosing the metrics that best represent your mobile goals streamlines your view and surfaces important trends.

2. Create a set of custom dashboards

Don’t waste minutes trying to navigate every screen in your analytics. Instead, save your must-have and custom reports to your dashboard, and have everything you need at your fingertips as soon as you log in. Save the deep-dives for later, and use your dashboard screen as a one-stop shop for checking in on your primary reports. These can easily reflect your chosen key metrics, and showcase changes over time, giving you a broader look at your app than just a one-day view.

3. Save your reports and have them emailed to you

Meaning to log-in and take a look, but just ran out of free time? Simple: set up your analytics tool to email you daily updates. This allows you to keep an eye out for changes and click into reports that need more attention (or look concerning/interesting). Plus, you can simply forward these analytics to other members of your team, instead of directing them to log in to the platform. This enables easy sharing and collaboration, and ensures everyone involved is hands-on and informed.

4. Look at your key user segments

Tracking app usage is important; tracking how different groups of users use your app is necessary. Whether you’re concerned with loyal users or frequent purchasers, users at risk of churning or the top social sharers, you’ve got a list of user segments whose actions are critical to track. Make sure to check in on these segments regularly to make sure you’re providing a great experience to both loyal and at-risk segments.

5. Hone in on your marketing campaign results

Trying out a new push notification or set up automated messaging campaign? Take a look at their performance in terms of impressions, CTR and conversions to assess their success. If you’re running ads to acquire new users, do a quick check of the number of new users acquired, the number of sessions, and the total revenue per campaign - checking this daily is critical to avoiding outrageous spend, managing your budget and informing ROI. That’s one marketing campaign you can’t avoid reviewing for long.
