iPhone 5s Outsells 5c by a Factor of 3.4x in the United States Opening Weekend

With Apple launching not just one but two new phones on Friday, there’s been much speculation about which of the two phones would emerge as the early adopter favorite. After just a little more than 48 hours after launch, early results show a clear winner – the iPhone 5s.

Percentage of active iphones in US

In less than 3 days, the iPhone 5s and 5c combined now represent about 1.36% of the total numbers of all iPhones activated in the U.S. market across the top 4 carriers AT&T, Verizon Wireless, Sprint and T-Mobile. From the data we are seeing, 1.05% of all iPhones in the United States are now iPhone 5s and just 0.31% are iPhone 5c. That means that the iPhone 5s outshines the 5c by a factor of 3.4x, a clear indicator that the early adopters are favoring the high-end 5s compared to 5c. This makes sense since those who feel the need to buy a new device the very weekend it launches are most likely the power users who want the highest-end phone experience.

Adoption by Carrier

Of the top U.S. carriers, AT&T has seen the highest adoption rates for both the 5s and 5c so far. 5s and 5c activations on AT&T represent 0.67% of all activated iPhones, versus 0.51% for Verizon, 0.12% for Sprint and 0.07% for T-Mobile.

International Adoption

We can see a similar pattern for international adoption; globally the 5s is outpacing the 5c by a factor of 3.7x. In some countries, the ratio is even more extreme, e.g. in Japan the 5s is outselling the 5c by a factor of 5x.

Percentage of active global iPhone users

At first glance, it’s not altogether clear whether poorer countries are buying more 5c's compared to 5s's, but it will be good to keep a close eye on this data in the next few days to see if there is any pattern emerging.

We are also keeping a close eye on overall market adoption of the 5s and 5c by country. As of right now, the United States has the lion share of the new devices, more than twice as much as all other countries and regions combined.
