Matt Restivo From NHL Wins 2015 Cynopsis Rising Star Award

As someone who works directly with customers day after day, it’s always great to see one of your most outspoken and visible clients be recognized for their achievements.

Matt Restivo, Director of Product at the National Hockey League, was recently announced as one of the winners of the 2015 Cynopsis Rising Star Awards! This Award program honors industry professionals who show the smarts, maturity, and composure to be one of the next generation’s leaders.

It was a no brainer to nominate Matt for this Award. He was brought in by the NHL after his time at ESPN specifically to help revamp their GameCenter Live™ mobile experience. The combination of his business acumen, communication skills and overall technical knowledge made him a crucial partner for me as we began to discuss the possibility of bringing the NHL on board as a Localytics customer. And, since then he has continued his constant communication and feedback as a customer.

His leadership goes well beyond what he did to help me though. Matt and his team at the NHL launched a complete reboot of the NHL app for iPhone and Android for the start of 2014-15 season. He also oversaw the development of 19 team apps on iOS and Android, as well as "Games" product development, like "Bracket Challenge." Matt also completed an overhaul of the NHL Game Center Live app in a record amount of time. Matt was able to work cross-functionally to get all these projects done well, managing both internal and vendor relationships with expert skill, confidence and communication.

Now for the juicy part. Let’s take a look at the numbers! Over the past season, he was able to:

  1. Improve YOY video viewing by >87%
  2. Increase news readership by >59%
  3. Increase user sessions >29%
  4. Increase Monthly Active Users by >15%
  5. Increase in-app $ spent by >13%
  6. Increase sessions / user by >11%

WOW! That’s not the end of it either. Matt also worked with his marketing colleagues, led by Nili Doft, to build out a robust user targeting strategy. At Localytics, we believe that smart Marketing is truly driven by rich analytics data across the entire app user lifecycle. The NHL used this data to granularly engage users by metrics like country, home locale, device type, network, subscription tier, and app usage, in-market vs. out of market users, etc. This kind of work takes a lot of communication, creativity and collaboration, and they saw all that work pay off; this strategy helped to drive logged-in users +20% and push opt-in +11% YOY. Additionally they were able to:

  1. Influence nearly 20% of NHL GameCenter LIVE™ in-app subscriptions through targeted messaging campaigns
  2. Identified call to action copy that resulted in 50% higher conversion rate in messaging campaigns
  3. Learned that users on tablets click on in-app messages more than twice as much as users on phones

As a friend of Matt’s and a hockey fan (Go Bruins!!), I couldn’t be happier for Matt to be recognized with this award.

Congrats Matt! Here’s to an even more successful 2016 season!
