In advance of the festivities, we’ve pinpointed three key themes that will guide the mobile discussion at SXSW.

Building Relationships

Many brands are stuck in legacy, web-centric ways of communicating with their customers. Mobile apps offer a unique opportunity to engage directly with users in real-time. As users become increasingly demanding of the responsiveness and omni-channel presence of the brands they do business with, businesses must adapt their communications strategies from one of ‘talking to’ to long-term relationship building.

Building better relationships with users will ultimately lead to personalization of the in-app experience. New engagement tools such as push and in-app messaging are quickly becoming essentials for mobile marketers. It’s only a matter of time before brands can interact one-to-one with app users based on their behavior and preferences in an automated fashion with personalization. The real movers and shakers at SXSW are already laying the data and marketing foundations for personalization.

Thinking Beyond the Smartphone

Will wearables ever catch on? What is the “Internet of Things”? How is it all connected? You can bet these questions will be explored in depth at SXSW Interactive. Mobile isn’t limited to smartphones and tablets, and neither are apps. For future technologies, expect to hear more about their common threads, which are likely to include an app architecture and the ability to leverage real-time, contextual data regardless of their form factor.

SXSW is packed with events designed to get you thinking about what’s coming next. Drop us a line if you’ll be in Austin at contact@localytics.com or follow our SXSW Twitter coverage at @localytics.
